Punctuation Inverted Commas

Inverted Commas are used to enclose the exact words of a speaker, or a quotation ; as,

  • "I would rather die," he exclaimed, "Than join the oppressors of my country."
  • Babar is said by Elphinstone to have been "the most admirable prince that ever reigned in Asia."
  • Inverted Commas or Quotation Marks :  Inverted commas or quotation marks are used to separate direct speech from the rest of the sentence. For example,

  • The lady said, 'I shall go home'.
  • What am I to you?' he asked.
  • Inverted commas are also sometimes used when we are mentioning the name of a book or an article in a sentence. For example: Have you read the book "Oliver Twist"
